Sin Seh Kai Artisan Bakery was established in January 2017. Sin Seh Kai is the place where it is located, which means “New World Park” in Hokkien. Artisan Bakery specialises in producing and supplying traditional artisanal breads, especially sourdough bread.

Artisan means a worker in a skilled trade, especially one that involves making things by hand. It also could be defined as food or drink that is made in a traditional or non-mechanized way by using high quality ingredients.

Founder of Sin Seh Kai Artisan Bakery, Ryan, was working in Singapore as a marketing executive. It is a company that wholesales food additives to large-scaled bakery factories. Because of the nature of the job, he has to attend courses to learn baking. During the process, he realised that most of the food in our daily life requires chemical substances to stabilize, which are harmful to our health.

“Because my father who was suffering from cancer, I started to prioritise on eating healthily. I decided to quit my job in Singapore and come back to my hometown and start making artisanal breads. I hope that my father can eat healthy. So, I started to explore and research about making breads and pastries without preservatives and additives.”

Artisan Bakery’s mission is to cultivate more young people to understand the importance of healthy food and to train more artisans. For instance, the most successful example is Bao Zi Ge.

Bao Zi Ge: Artisanal Vegetarian Steamed Bun

Bao Zi Ge was established in January 2020. The founder of Bao Zi Ge, Chee Yan, joined the baking industry five years ago. He is one of the artisans trained by Ryan, from zero to hero.

The uniqueness of Bao Zi Ge is that the buns are all made with organic ingredients. In order to enhance the quality of Bao Zi, they use the Yudane and Tangzhong method, as well as the Poolish technique.

It all started with a small stall at Tanjung Bungah. The founder did every single process by himself, from purchasing raw materials to production, services and even sales & marketing.

“One man show is really very challenging. I did look for business partners but the majority of them are not interested in making Bao Zi, especially artisanal Bao Zi. Hence, I hope to pass on this craftsmanship and create more awareness about the importance of having healthy food.”
