The Warung is now opening up a second branch in Common Ground, a co-working space located on the second floor of Moulmein Rise Shoppes!
Warung is a Malay and Indonesian word. It is commonly known as a modest Indonesian restaurant or a place that sells things, mostly groceries or foodstuff. Majority of Indonesians and Malaysians refer warung as a type of small neighbourhood convenience store. However, The Warung in George Town has recreated a modern day “warung” that sells daily essential products.
Established in September 2018, The Warung opened its first branch at Victoria Street. Founded by a group of like-minded friends, it started off with selling quality goods for a simple and everyday lifestyle. The Warung provides a platform for local makers and designers to market and promote their products.

“The lifestyle store then added a cafe that serves coffee and waffles to enhance the shopping experience of our customers. Since then, we continuously explore and innovate the menu. The cafe unit soon became the main component of The Warung together with the retail part.”
Co-founder of The Warung, Jocelyn
In September 2020, The Warung collaborated with Common Ground to operate the cafe at their space on the second floor of Moulmein Rise Shoppes, Pulau Tikus. The site is one of the most established commercial districts outside George Town City centre.
The Interior

Located in the co-working space, the interior of the cafe is designed by Common Ground in a combination of modern and Scandinavian style. The concept focuses on clean, simple lines, spacious and with ample natural lighting. The cafe uses light-themed palette incorporation of natural elements such as form-pressed wood, enameled aluminium, steel and wide plank flooring. Besides, the cafe’s decor is kept to a minimum with a touch of greenery to bring in some life.

Furthermore, the cafe is separated into two main sessions. There are seatings suitable for business discussion and a comfortable dining area. In addition, the space between each seating formation is wide enough for the servers to pass through easily. Meanwhile, the aisle space also provides a great extent of privacy for the cafe customers.

The Menu
Besides their favourite sweet waffles menu, The Warung at Common Ground offers a slightly different menu. In order to cater to the demand of office workers in the area, The Warung is serving brunch and lunch meals, as well as other desserts and snacks. For instance, some of the new menu include Shredded Lemon Chicken Rice Bowl, Chicken Bolognese and the new waffle, ‘The Ground’, served exclusively only in Common Ground.

The menu is created to balance the expectations of the usual community who come to chill and the busy-bees who look for practical and good food for their working day. In addition, the price range between RM6.00 to RM20.00 is considered wallet-friendly.
